could have been prevented if somebody had been more attentive or
responsible. But no matter how attentive and responsible you are,
someone else could cause an accident by their lack of those qualities,
and you could end up with a damaged or totaled vehicle and grievous
injuries.
One way to deal with this situation is to stock your vehicle with
supplies which will serve you well at the time of any car accident and
shortly thereafter. Another way is to make some specific decisions
ahead of time.
1. Personal Supplies for the Vehicle
After a car accident, all involved are required to remain at the scene
until given permission to leave by the police officers. Therefore it
would be helpful to have some items for use during this period, even
if you are not injured:
• Drinking water
• Snacks
• A blanket or sweater
• Some raingear
• A flashlight
• Toys if you have young children in the car often
• A cell phone to stay in touch with family, job etc. and to call
911
2. Accident Supplies for the Vehicle
If someone else is injured, on no account try to move them, regardless
of how uncomfortable they appear to be, as a move could worsen their
injuries. If you yourself are injured in the car accident, you can
treat it somewhat if it's minor enough.
• So have a first-aid kit so you can wrap a bandage to slow down
bleeding, clean off an abrasion with an alcohol wipe, or take an
aspirin or Tylenol.
• Keep an implement that can cut through a seatbelt and one that can
break a car window. Devices are available which can do both. You will
want to be able to free yourself from a seatbelt if the buckle is out
of your reach or damaged and stuck. If there's danger of fire or
further collision on a freeway, you will want to be able to get out of
your vehicle and may have to break a window if the doors are stuck.
• Keep a disposable camera in your vehicle. If possible, get out at
the accident scene and immediately take photos to preserve evidence of
what happened. Photograph close-ups of vehicle damage, license plates,
and tire marks on the road. Get shots of the overall scene from
further away, to show the vehicle positions and any nearby street
signs or debris in the road. If you ever need to file a legal claim,
or defend yourself from another person's lawsuit, these photos will
provide enormously helpful evidence.
3. Decisions to Make Ahead of Time
For car repairs – Find a good mechanic, whether a small business or
your car dealer, and keep that phone number in the car. If necessary
you can have your vehicle towed there from the accident site.
For towing – Make sure your car insurance includes emergency
roadside service, and keep that phone number in the car. It may be on
a separate card you can carry in your wallet. Some insurance companies
do not have a special number to call for emergency services, but will
reimburse you up to a certain amount for the cost of towing,
jumpstarting etc. If you have that arrangement, locate a reliable
towing service and keep their number in the car.
